Case study of RAMOJI FILM CITY Ė SYMPHONY

The Company
The Ramoji Film City is set in a 200 acre campus on the outskirts of Hyderabad. It is the largest and most comprehensive studio complex in the world. Besides numerous indoor studios there are a number of permanent outdoor sets to cater to almost every need of the film maker. It also offers production and post-production facilities and other allied services to film makers all over the world. In fact Ramoji Film Cityís ďSymphonyĒ is the worlds most advanced digital audio post-production facility. This ultra modern complex is spread over two acres and has been designed by John Flyn and Sam Tayoshima of Acoustic Design Group, London. This technological wonder, backed by highly trained professionals, offers the whole range of digital audio post production processes today.




One of the world's first Harrison MPC-2 digital mixing consoles is available at this state- of-the-art facility, and the latest Fairlight DREAM digital audio workstations are installed throughout the complex. THX, Dolby Digital and DTS licensing programs certify the facilities on offer.

Background
APW President was involved with Ramoji Film City right from the time when the Symphony facility was being planned. The requirement of the customer was to -

  1. Install maximum equipment in the available rack space
  2. To minimize requirements of available floor space
  3. Install heavy equipment in the racks
  4. To minimize utilization of power
  5. Provide effective thermal management of the densely populated racks
  6. To maintain Aesthetics


The Problem
Ramoji Film City planned to establish Symphony as a fully networked audio environment facility for the simultaneous execution of multiple audio post-production projects, thereby helping users save time. It was to be the only audio post-production unit in India to offer such a networked environment. But there were many factors that needed to be considered.

• Space was a major constraint since the digital audio mixing workstations occupied a large percentage of the studio space. The customerís requirement was to house Audio amplifiers, power amplifiers, Video mixing units, Monitors and Synchronizer units along with Digital modems.

• Further, the power amplifiers dissipated excessive heat. Adequate thermal management had to be provided.

• The equipment was of varied depth, height and width.

• The racks were to be placed in two labs, which were in two different locations. The labs had varying ceiling heights.

• One had to also consider the voluminous cabling within the rack. As the equipment was to be densely populated, the racks had to be configured so as to provide flexibility for maintenance.

• Adequate provision was to be made in the racks for future expansion

The Solution
APW President suggested several floor plans, indicating various rack configurations. These configurations were drawn-up taking in to consideration the applications, users, and future expansion.

• 19" Racks of 42U H x 900mm D were proposed for the bigger lab and 30U H x 900 D were proposed for the smaller lab. 900mm depth racks were proposed to accommodate the varied depths of the equipment - ranging from 400mm to 725mm. Taking into consideration the voluminous cabling, adequate space was provided at the rear by selecting 900mm deep cabinets.

• As some of the equipment was not 19Ē mountable, appropriate shelves, support angles, and cantilever shelves were provided. Heavy-duty shelves were provided for equipment weighing in excess of 50 kgs, and support angles for other standard 19" rack mount equipment.

• Adequate ventilation was provided in the rack. The sides of the cabinets were vented and fan housing units at the top of the rack exhausted the heat. The front door had slotted trims. The rear door of the rack was fully vented. This helped in making effective use of the available air conditioning facility

• Cabling accessories helped in managing the cabling. This helped in effective maintenance of the equipment, as also easy service access.

• A highly appealing colour combination of RAL 7035 and 7037 helped in blending the racks in to the studioís colour scheme.

• Use of the right shelves and trays helped in correct placement of equipment. Effective use of cabling accessories led to ease of maintenance and manageability.
