APW President Systems is proud to announce the launch of its new and highly innovative IMPress server cabinet family.

The IMPress enclosure solution, designed for the global market, was launched on 15th June 2010 at the CommunicAsia2010 Singapore Expo.

The IMPress product range is an unique enclosure solution especially designed to address the major challenges faced by today’s Datacenter Managers. It is the result of a radically new design approach which sets it apart from conventional designs that have been the standard for decades. IMPress introduces several highly customer-centric new features, the result of feedback from actual users gathered over many years.

“The IMPress family for the housing of Servers and Networking equipment has been developed keeping in mind the problems faced by Integrators and Installers. Based on an “Open Frame” concept, IMPress provides unmatched all-round accessibility, making equipment installation and cable management much easier than is possible with conventional “4 corner pillar” enclosure designs,” said E A Elias, Managing Director, APW President Systems.

The design goals for the IMPress emphasize ease-of-assembly at site, rapid deployment – by making it easy to gather in the pre-installed cables from overhead or under floor – and the orderly routing and termination of the optical fibre cable bunches. Several path-breaking new features and accessory items have been developed especially for the IMPress family so as to provide Datacenter Managers with a complete solution to the problems that they face routinely today.

IMPress from APW President
IMPress cabinets can be assembled at site in 20 minutes or less by a team of two persons using common hand tools. All parts and assemblies are designed for rapid installation and no adjustments are needed. All external covers and panels are latched from inside the cabinet, thus ensuring security. The rear of the cabinet has built-in provision for the installation of power distribution accessories and cable management channels. Here too the “Open Frame” design of the IMPress allows these accessories to be located at the extreme sides of the cabinet, leaving the centre space clear for the unimpeded flow of hot exhaust air from the equipment towards the fully perforated rear doors.

IMPress Cabling Frame
The IMPress Cabling Frame, which is being introduced with the IMPress cabinet, will be of particular interest to Datacenter Managers. It is designed to be constructed at site from a kit and fits between two 600mm wide Server cabinets so as to form a 200mm wide compartment between them. Extensive cable management facilities are provided within the Cabling Frame for the orderly and safe routing and management of optical fibre cable bunches. Front and rear doors, that open either way, can be unlatched only after gaining access through the adjoining cabinets, thus maintaining the high level of security that is a feature of the IMPress.

The IMPress Cabling Frame eliminates the need to have 800mm wide networking cabinets solely for the housing and distribution of cables to Server Cabinets. This makes it possible for Datacenter planners to standardise on just one style of cabinet instead of two, and can also lead to savings in valuable floor space.

The IMPress family is a highly engineered and feature-rich enclosure solution which is the result of many years of experience in the industry. APW President has been assisted in this project by David Horne, who was the long serving Head of Design at APW Electronics UK, formerly Vero Electronics.

David has long been recognized as one of the top designers in the enclosure industry and was responsible for evolving the Imrak and Imserv range of cabinets with their distinctive design styling, which has since been replicated world-wide by the enclosure industry. David’s designs are based on simplicity in approach, clarity of purpose and an overall elegance – all of which are visible in the clean and elegant looks of the IMPress cabinet.

President Systems has introduced COOL WAY, a cold aisle containment system for deploying in data centers. With energy efficiency becoming a critical goal, any technology to save power would be a boon to business. According to the Green Grid (an international non-profit organization with a mandate to increase energy efficiency in the IT sector), cooling requirements consume approximately 63 percent of the power in a datacenter.

As one of the major providers of data center infrastructure solutions, APW President continues to innovate and come up with energy-saving solutions that are designed to set standards in customer value. In today’s data centers there is greater heat generation in equipment, and a greater demand on the cooling system. Most high-end computer servers now require careful engineering to remove the heat generated by it. So, in a typical data center design, every server location has to be provided with cool air at the optimal volume, temperature and humidity. “It is very common to find short-circuiting of air paths with the hot exhaust air from the cabinets returning directly back into the cold aisle and thereby reducing cooling effectiveness. Significant improvement in cooling effectiveness, and thereby energy efficiencies, can be achieved by employing cold aisle containment systems.” said E. A. Elias, Managing Director, APW President Systems.

In the design of COOL WAY, optimally conditioned air is directed to a sealed cold aisle which ensures that the thermal variations within the data centre do not affect the volume of cold air delivered to the front of the IT equipment. This solution is being introduced through the company’s network of sales and service outlets in India and abroad.

“COOL WAY guides the cooled air from the air-conditioning inlet tiles on the raised floor into a sealed cold aisle between the server racks. Equipment inside the racks are cooled as much as required and they then exhaust the heated air into the surrounding room, where it rises to the top. The sealed COOL WAY system prevents the mixing of cool and warm air in the room and it ensures that the air returned to the air-conditioning units is always at a higher temperature,” explained S. Venkatraman, Assistant VP – Sales & Service, APW President Systems.

“APW President has over 27 years of experience in innovating custom designs for infrastructure, systems management, operations and interactive interfaces across many application environments. COOL WAY reflects our commitment to meeting the immediate as well as future challenges of the data center administrator,” he added.

APW President Systems has introduced an innovative cable

management facility, continuing a long tradition of innovation.

Raised floors are an option for installations that include a large number of cables in today’s IT,

Networking and Data Centers. They are more efficient and less costly than overhead systems,

where hot air rises. Instead of running cables through the ceiling, contractors can easily pull them

under the raised flooring. The solutions offer cooling, reduction in the number and volume of

discreet cables, efficient consolidation of physical hardware ports and reduced jumper cable

lengths for above-floor management. Since they offer the appeal of easier upgrading, designers

and contractors are seeking out efficient solutions for adding and removing cabling and

applications through raised-floor systems. But raised floor installations are becoming more

challenging.

“In the planning of the raised-floor system, cable management is a significant challenge in today’s

IT, Networking and Data Centers. A good cable management system can actually make installation

easier, improve airflow in cabinets and racks, saving power and aiding in equipment cooling,” said

S. Venkatraman, Associate Vice-President, Sales & Services, APW President.

“In this context, the innovative pre-slotted brushed tile system from APW President addresses

several problem areas of installation, including the damage likely due to bending of cables and

cold air leakages from tile slots. It is designed to offer valuable benefits to our Data Center

customers,” he added.

Installation simplified

The pre-slotted brushed tile is a CRCA (Cold Rolled Cold Annealed) fabricated tile, with 4 slots of

70 x 440mm long. These fabricated tiles are designed, similar to the conventional 600 x 600mm

tile in a data Center. The slots on the brushed tile are provided with smooth beading on the edges,

thus preventing any possible damage to the data cable while bending it through. The cutout

profiles on the brushed tiles are covered with nylon bristle brush panels. These brush panels, while

allowing data cables to pass through snugly, can spring back and interlock when there are no

cables, actively sealing the slot and preventing leakage of under floor cold air through the cutout.

The current practice followed in most Data Centers is to make a cutout slot on the conventional

square tile to allow cables below the raised flooring to pass through. This practice, however, has

several drawbacks:

• Delay: the cabling team has to wait for the cutout slot to be provided on the tile, which

means a loss of time.

• Inefficient airflow: cold air leakage from the cutout slot.

• Pollution: the tile cutting spreads fine dust all over the place, adding to pollution

• Damage: sharp edges on the slot can cut into the cable passing through, thereby

damaging it

• Non-reusable: no flexibility of relocating the tile with the cutout slot, and hence it cannot

be used more than once.

Advantages of Brushed Tiles

As seen in the picture above, conventional tiles below the cabinet where the cabling is required are

replaced by the pre-slotted brushed tiles. This allows the cables positioned below the raised floor

to enter the cabinet smoothly, with no damage.

• No pollution: brushed tiles are pre-slotted, thus avoiding the pollution associated with the

on-site cutting of conventional tiles.

• Air seal: All slots have self-sealing brush panels to prevents cold air escaping through.

• Quicker installation: replacing conventional tiles with brushed tiles speeds up the cabling

installation process as they are ready to use

• Reusable: Relocation of the brushed tile is possible, rather than having to scrap the

conventional tile once it has been cut for a specific position.

• Manageability: cables are routed safely, neatly and in an uncluttered path.
