Case study of Tata Teleservices ltd (TTSL)
It's all part of APW President Systems Ltd ability to identify, solve and satisfy today's and tomorrow's customers through innovative solutions and ideas.

The Company
Tata Teleservices ltd (TTSL) offers its products and services to customers across India under the brandname of "Tata Indicom”. TTSL is India's leading Private Basic Service Operator. The company is an integral part of the TATA Group's venture into Telecommunications, and it already has a significant presence in all sectors of the telecom industry - Basic, ISP, NLD and Broadband. With this holistic presence in telecom, the individual companies offer synergy to each other and to the Tata vision for the Indian telecom industry.

TATA Teleservices has a number of pioneering innovations in products and services to its credit
•   First private operator to launch CDMA based wireless connections
•   First private operator to launch Limited Mobility services in the country
•   First to launch Smart Card based Pay Telephones
•   First to launch Centrex - a virtual exchange for the corporate customer
•   First to launch post-paid Internet services under the brand name Net ready     Internet Services
•   First Private operator to install 1000 VPT (Village Public Telephone)

While increasing their Network penetration and access across the six states throughout the country, TTSL had tied up with many OEM suppliers like Lucent, Marconi, ECI etc, to source communication equipment, all of which conforms to either the 19” or ETSI standards for Rack Mounted equipment.

The Problem
Since TTSL was sourcing equipment from a number of different vendors, each of whom had differing requirements for interconnectivity and integration into the enclosures, we worked closely with TTSL to document the overall requirements and work out the most cost- effective solutions. Our analysis showed that the following requirements had to be catered for :
The enclosure had to be rigid and sturdy enough to meet semi-outdoor applications.
Protection against ingress of dust/sealing to IP 54 level would be preferred
To handle equipment from multiple vendors, it would be necessary to provide for   mounting of 19" and/or ETSI equipment in one and the same cabinet .
Managing bulk cabling would be important.
Thermal Management issues would need to be addressed.
Safety of critical components was of prime importance.
Provisions had to be made for mounting of Krone blocks.

After assessing the problem, APW President made a set of recommendations which would provide a comprehensive solution to the problems listed above.

The Solution
APW Presidents solution consisted of the following

Top-of-the-line Cyber Rack Deluxe as the main system cabinet.
A cabinet configuration of 36U Ht, 800W, and 800D was chosen as it would cater to the housing of both ETSI and 19" rack-mount equipment simultaneously
Base Plinth at the bottom of the rack, with a heavy duty bottom cover, for supporting heavy equipment.
IP 54 kit to keep the racks dust free.
Louvered side panels with filters to prevent ingress of dust.
Fan housing unit with 6 fans to take care of the heat dissipation in the racks.
Special Z brackets to mount the non- rackmount equipment.
Window Mouldings for proper structured cable management.

The Benefits
Enhanced stability and rigidity due to advanced structural design of the racks
As the application was semi-outdoor, 36U racks were recommended as this height made it easier for the racks to be located near staircase wells/terraces, and other congested areas.
Base frame with heavy duty bottom cover ensured that heavy equipment could be placed at the bottom of the rack

The resulting benefits proved very effective. The solution ensured that all the problems of concern to Tata Teleservices were taken care of.
